Charming fishing villages, deep forests and fantastic beaches...
From the forests and lakes of Dalsland to the smooth rocks and sandy beaches of the Bohuslän coastline and the glorious city of Gothenburg, a visit to Götaland is well worthwhile. Götaland consists of five different landskaps (regions): Västergötland, Bohuslän and Dalsland in the west, Halland in the south and Östergötland in the east. The landscapes and attractions of each are uniquely different.

Apart from being a must see, Gothenburg in Västergötland is the best place from which to start exploring this area of western Sweden. Take your time to stroll down the majestic Kungsportsavenyn, Sweden’s version of the Champs Elysées, and stop off to sample some of the region’s seafood delicacies in one of the many restaurants and cafes. Visit one of the city’s many museums. The Röhsska Museum of Arts and Crafts celebrates Swedish design through the ages, while the Konstmuseet (Art Museum) has a substantial collection of works that includes Impressionist paintings, Pop Art and Swedish and Nordic works.

For some excitement, why not visit the Liseberg fun park and test your bottle on one of their many rides. And of course, don’t miss the famous annual Gothenburg party every August. From Gothenburg, take a boat to some of the nearby islands – Brännö and Köpstadsö are both worth a visit. Or, head to Vänersborg on Lake Vännern and take an elk safari in the Hunneberg and Hanneberg Nature Reserve. Don’t miss the spectacular castle of Läcklo Slott, near Lidköping – it is one of the best surviving examples of 17th century Swedish baroque architecture. Next, visit the Bohuslän coast, famous for its picturesque little fishing villages and its beautiful coastline of granite rocks. Visit the fishing villages of Klädesholmen and Åstol. Make sure to visit Tanumshede and nearby Vitlycke, home to famous rock carvings. The Vitlycke Museum does a good job of explaining the paintings and also has a slide show. Dalsland has more lakes than any other part of Sweden, so why not go on a canoeing trip and take in the impressive aqueduct at Håverud. Or, head south of Gothenburg to Halland. Visit the vibrant town of Halmstad and take a dip in one of the nearby sandy beaches, or try out one of the other resorts in the area such as Falkenberg and Varberg. Visit Östergötland and travel on the famous Göta canal – Bergs Slussar is one of the best places to experience this canal or visit Kolmården, Scandinavia’s largest zoo.sweden_tanumshede.jpg
