South Greenland is the Norwegian Icelander Eric the Red country. The first time he explored the area was 982 to 985. When he settled down in a settlement, which he called Brattahlid, which today is sheep farming settlement of Qassiarsuk. There is only 30 minutes by boat from and opposite the airport. Narsarsuaq and its surroundings in Tunulliarfik Fjord plays a major role in Greenland's history, it is precisely from these valleys in Tunulliarfik bottom of the fjord, Greenland got its name. Norsemen sailed here from Iceland and settled on the southern tip of Greenland for more than 1000 years ago and gave Narsarsuaq a name that suggests that an Arctic forest covered most of the great plain. They brought home stories of a deep, green covered fjord to their people in Iceland and the Vikings ended thus naming the country Greenland.
South Greenland is a relatively small and sparsely populated geographic area, whereas about half of Greenland about 55,000 residents live in the
"major" cities Nuuk,
Sisimiut and
Ilulissat
in western Greenland
Did you know that the 500 of the world's 3,500 known minerals found in Greenland. Kvanefjeldet at Narsaq contain specific minerals and is a paradise for rock collectors and geologists. The red gemstones, tugtupit, are only a few places in the world besides the Ilimaussaq area near Narsaq. The Jewelry stone is considered Greenland's national stone.
Narsaq is centrally located in a huge fjord at the foot of the 685 meter high mountain, Qaqqarsuaq. The glaciers north of the city takes care of the supply of icebergs and fjords are rich in seals, salmon, trout and minke whales. Temperatures are friendly; around 22 degrees in summer and minus 17 in winter. Narsaq was founded as a city in 1959 and has approximately 1500 inhabitants
Narsarsuaq is the gateway to South Greenland and the Greenlandic name means "the great plain" and is named after the surrounding nature.

Narsarsuaq is 100 km inside Tunulliarfik fjord, on the edge of, or just 6 km from the ice sheet.
Narsarsuaq was founded as an American air base in 1941 under the name Bluie West 1
There are only about 160 inhabitants in Narsarsuaq, which almost all are employed at the airport
Norse ruins from 1000-1400 century are scattered around Narsarsuaq, including Brattahlid, Erik the Red's home, which today is the Greenlandic settlement of Qassiarsuk, where the Greenland's first Christian church was built.

Half an hour by boat from the airport town of Narsarsuaq lies the small sheep farming village of Qassiarsuk, which has about 50 inhabitants
Time is set 1,000 years back, when you enter the reconstructions of Erik the Red's long farm and Thodhildurs Church, Greenland's first church. Both are found in the settlement of Qassiarsuk.
On a helicopter ride from Narsarsuaq
you see places you do not normally have the opportunity. Glaciers, fjords systems and magnificent valleys that may otherwise be more or less impassable.
Treat yourself to a look out over the landscape
and icebergs and experience the huge ice sheet in bird's eye view. helicopter rides

mountain camps.
