Visit Hilleroed / Hillerød

Hilleroed / Hillerød is a town with 29,951 inhabitants (2010) located in North Zealand. It is the administrative headquarters for the Capital Region and the third largest city in this part of Sealand after Copenhagen and Elsinore.

Hilleroed grew up around the old farm Hillerødsholm (Hylderødsholm referred elder at the later of arms) which was owned by Herluf Trolls and Birgitte Gøye. The farm was located at the medieval village Hilderød (Hilde clearance), which is believed to come from 1200-century. Frederik 2 took over, however Hillerødsholm farm land and built instead of Frederiksborg Castle, which his son Christian IV out later and rebuilt. Frederik 2 made many efforts to make the city into the region's commercial center..

Hillerød kortFrederiksborg Slot / PalaceFrederiksborg Palace Frederiksborg Castle is situated in the centre of Hillerød on three islets in the Castle Lake surrounded by Frederiksborg Castle Gardens. Frederiksborg Castle is named after King Frederik II who built the oldest parts of the castle in 1560. His son - the Danish architect King - Christian IV, was born here in 1577, and he later pulled down many of the old castle buildings to give space for his new renaissance castle which was built in the beginning of the 17th century. During the years the castle has been used as a royal residence and the setting for many important ceremonial events, for example it was here new kings were crowned. In 1859 a fire broke out and destroyed many of the castle buildings, but the castle was rebuilt from 1860-1884 with financial support from the founder of the Carlsberg Breweries, J.C. Jacobsen. It was also his idea that the castle should since then accommodate a Museum of National History, and it is today regarded as a national monument of great historical importance.I really enjoyed my visit to the castle. Inside numerous magnificent rooms like the Audience Chamber, the Great Hall and the Rose (the Knights’ Room) and outside very beautiful surroundings with the Castle Gardens and the Castle Lake. If you are interested in history, palaces and castles this is a great place to visit on a daytrip from Copenhagen.Read also my few other tips about Frederiksborg Castle

How to get to Hilleroed / Hillerød

Arrival by Rail

From urban Copenhagen - Elsinore and Hilleroed is a train connection. approx. 30 min.

The best way to get there is with the suburbian trans(S train).
it tkaes 30 minutes to get there.
An ordinary ticker costs 10 danish kroner per zone.
my guess is that it´s 4 or 5 zones so it will cost you 40-50 kroner.
you can buy a klippekort that is good for 10 times 2 zones and that will save you some money.
if you are travelling to and from the airport, then you can use the klippekort for that too, both on the S train and on the metro.
