Cold Hawaii – The surfing paradise in Klitmoeller

'Cold Hawaii' has a reputation as one of Europe's last unspoiled surfing spots. So in December 2015, even though temperatures were hovering around 0° C, windsurfer legend Kevin Pritchard jumped at the chance to return to this top surfing destination on Denmark's West Coast. 

Around 1600, Klitmoeller was known for its trading of ships to South Norway but, today it is primarily surfers who contribute to put the village on the map, making it known as one of the very best surfing spots within the Cold Hawaii area. The area surrounding Klitmøller was discovered by the surfers as early as the 1980s; and, in the beginning of the 1990s, a few Danish surfers decided to settle down in the area.

Today, the area has practically developed into a small surfers’ colony, and the surfers now living in Klitmøller have succeeded in creating an exciting environment that adds new life to the town. Every year, Klitmøller sees a number of meetings; and, since 2010, the village has hosted the international surfing championship Cold Hawaii PWA World Cup with of 32 of the best surfers in the world competing for the cup. Over the years, interest in this competition has been on the increase – in Denmark as abroad; and, since 2013, HRH Crown Prince Frederik has been the patron of the PWA World Cup in Cold Hawaii.

The two reefs outside the coast to the south of the point of Oerhage contribute to make Klitmoeller particularly well-suited for different disciplines within the sport of surfing. Here, the formation of huge waves facilitates wave-, wind-, kite- and stand up paddle surfing. This is not solely for professionals for, as a matter of fact, you can learn the noble art of surfing if you visit the Cold Hawaii Surf Camp. 

The Cold Hawaii surfers are not solely focused on Klitmøller itself; for also Agger Tange to the south as well as Vorupør and Hanstholm in North Thy provide lots of opportunities. This crowding of surfing locations makes the area unique; for, regardless of wind conditions, there will always be one optimal location – always providing, of course, that there is wind. 

Every year, Cold Hawaii and Klitmøller surf club NASA (North Atlantic Surf Association) organise the surfing festival Surfjoint. The agenda comprises e.g. concerts by bands, DJs, international competing within windsurfing, kite surfing and paddle surfing, a surf-film festival, open air BBQ and free surf lessons. Visited by more than 1000 people from all over Northern Europe, the Surfjoint festival represents an ideal opportunity for making new friendships.

In addition to Cold Hawaii, the entire North Jutland region is generally rich on surfing opportunities, along the west coast as well as in the Limfjord area.
