Picturesquely located on the shores of Castle Lake lies Frederiksborg Castle and Castle Gardens.

This unique Renaissance castle was built by King Christian 4 In 1600 - century's first decade, as an expression of his position as a powerful North European monarch.

After a dramatic fire castle fire in 1859, large parts of the interior of the castle destroyed.

The large reconstruction work was funded by national subscriptions and donations from private individuals. Carlsberg brewery founder JCJacobsen, took an active part in the project and suggested in 1877 that the castle should be the location for a national history museum.

The Museum tells the 500 year history of Denmark through historical paintings, portraits, furniture and decorative arts.

There are changing exhibitions, permanent tours on Sundays and seasonal activities for children, the museum puts Denmark's history into perspective.


History

Frederiksborg Castle's history

1560-1620: Frederiksborg being built and in 1560 acquired Frederik 2 Hillerødsholm Manor and built the first part of Frederiksborg Castle. But in the years 1600-1620 tore his son Christian 4 castle down and built the Renaissance palace we know today. Frederiksborg Castle history Hillerød

While the castle was built, lived Christian 4 in a large Italian-inspired pleasure palace called Saving money which he had built on the other side of the lake. Frederiksborg Castle was used as a royal residence in the following hundred år.

1700 - 1859: Time of Change
In 1720, Christian 4.s pleasure palace demolished, and also took instead a beautiful baroque garden. The castle itself was also renovated in the 1730s, but the castle was of use as a royal residence by the end of 1700. Instead, Frederiksborg place where you picked up the royal portrait collection.

In the mid-1800s came new life at Frederiksborg Castle, Frederik 7 moved. Here he was married to Louise Rasmussen, who later became known as Countess Danner.

royal couple rebuilt the castle to make the home more modern. Among other things, they had installed several fireplaces and stoves to heat the large room. It was one of those new hot springs, which in 1859 caused the great fire. Large parts of the interior burned out, and several places were only the thick walls back. Church and Audience Hall was spared.

1860 - today: Brewer's museum
As Frederiksborg Castle had to be rebuilt after the fire in 1859, were arranged both a national collection and a lottery for the benefit of the castle.

royal family decided that they would no longer use the castle as a residence, and it was therefore an open question what the castle would be used. Carlsberg founder JC Jacobsen, suggested that there was established a museum in the castle, and he offered to pay for the structure of the museum and its further expenses. The museum is now an independent department of Carlsberg Foundation.
