Stevns Klint Moen

Stevns Klint is both beautiful and dramatic. NOW also part of the UNESCO World Heritage! On a summer's chalk seafloor colors the sea with amazing blue color, and the white cliff stands proud, topped by the green crowns of the trees. Legend told that the Cliff King has his residence in one of the cliff caves.

Seen from the sea, the well 20 km long cliff rises as a massive promontory. If you come from the land side, so be prepared for a surprise when the flat land of Stevns is abruptly cut off by the 41 meter high cliff. From the top of the cliff you have a nice view over the Øresund and on clear days to Sweden, Copenhagen, the Oresund Bridge.

Stevns Klint consists of chalk and limestone formed 65 million years ago when Denmark was covered by a deep sea. At the bottom of the cliff chalk, which consists of shells from microscopic algae. The chalk holds fossils from animals that lived on the seafloor - sea urchins, clams and many others. At the top of the cliff limestone is formed by bryozoans with marked wavy bands of flint. (Chert) is a hard limestone which has been used for building stone.

 The soft chalk in the bottom of the cliff washed away by the waves, while the lime is hanging the cliff the characteristic anvil profile. Cliff collapses occur when an overhang collapses or loose blocks fall - generally during winter or spring.

Between the chalk and the limestone is the Fish Clay - a thin gray clay. Fish Clay bears witness to a disaster which struck the earth and wiped out more than half of the contemporary animal and plant species - including the dinosaurs. Scientists are still debating on what triggered climate disaster but there's little doubt that it was a combination of high levels of CO2 in the air after heavy volcanic activity and a large meteor impact.

The cliffs can be seen from several places, but Højerup and Flagbanken recommended.

The cliff is 30 meters high, but the beach can be reached by a solid staircase.

The church was built by a captain in distress, who promised to build a chapel if he was saved.

The church is located on the 30 m high cliff. It was consecrated in 1357, but the sea undermining the cliff, and in 1928 overthrew the choir in the sea. The rest of the church is secured by underpinning.

Acc. the narrative moves the church at a tiny step further inland every Christmas night. The last service was held in 1910. You can stand inside the church and see the sea through a door.

Since the church was built around the year 1250 had the edge of the cliff approached ruthlessly. According to local legends the church moved every Christmas night a tiny step towards the country, but it was not enough to save the Church.

In the 1600s were the cliff begun to chip away at the cemetery with the macabre result coffins and skeletons sticking out of the cliff. In 1910 they gave up to use the church, it would take another 18 years before fate caught up building.

The partly ruined church quickly became a hit. During the three days visited about 40,000 people Højerup. They were fascinated by the unusual sight of a torn up church and what was left of choir, alter, coffins and skeletons on the beach. Quite soon after the crash, it was decided to reinforce the church against further slides. Today towering church proudly at the extreme edge of the cliff and the vanished choir has been replaced by a view terrace that provides a magnificent view over the cliff and sea.

On March 16, 1928 at five o'clock in the morning there was a cliff collapses at Højerup. It has happened before and since, but this cliff collapses was special because it took the choir from Højerup joy. Church in fall.'
